Aloha No Kakou,
To all my ohana, friends and everyone who loves POHOIKI mahalo for your support. This is my dedication to keep this place alive and share it to the world. My name is Keoni Kealoha Alvarez a native Hawaiian filmmaker from the island of Hawai'i. My Hawaiian ancestors came from Puna "Kealoha Lapaku Kaui is our ohana line". My brothers and I grew up in Puna and are graduates of Pahoa High and Elementary School. As children till adults we have great memories camping, surfing, long boarding and body boarding at Pohoiki. It's been many years since this Pohoiki Surf website has been down and off the web.... but now it's back and running.... which today I will never take for granted.
In 2018 since Pele made world news paving her way to visit Puna to clean her aina. Although today I live afar and I think it's time I share the love and awesome memories our Hawaiian people have for this place. I never thought over the years of taking pictures and documenting Pohoiki would be now a archive for Puna. I believe the "Mana" of this place still remains within this place. The kupunas spirit of the past and present can be felt in the land, wind and ocean. The Mana is strong and Pele will spare Pohoiki for all to continue to enjoy. Mahalo Ke akua for this special place!!
What does Pohoiki mean?
Little (iki) Depression (Poho) - Little Depression
Pohoiki is all about the reef.... now black sand lol and waves. It's a serious spot made only fo da experience. This beach has several bays made to everyone's liking lefts and rights. When everywhere is flat Pohoiki usually has waves. Respect da ocean da aina and especially da locals or else you goin get cracks. Peace out!
