Throughout the world Hawaiians was the first people to ever
surf on waves. Hawaiians invented the sport, but surfing was
more then a sport to Hawaiians it was a life style
and tradition.
Hawaiians surfed Hawai'i's
waves for hundreds of years.
Surfing played a part in the
annual celebration  Hawaiians
called Makahiki.
Surfing (He’e Nalu) on surf boards was enjoyed by
cheifs, commoners of both sexes.
King Kamehameha The Great
train in his youth to surf with
canoe and surf board. He was a
great surfer and expert of
the ocean.
Hawaiian women in the ocean on their body boards.
Eh? they invented the first body boards too.
These are the first drawings of Hawaiian surfers by
early foreign explorers such as Captain Cook.
The wooden surf boards were shaped from koa or the much
lighter wood wiliwili or bread fruit, carefully smooth and oiled.
